Hey there,
Thanks for downloading this templates. I hope
it's everything you were expecting.

   ~Ray

*** NOTE:
---------
I don't plan to get into a tutorial on HTML,
but I will try to help you get this template
functioning for your needs. Some understanding
of HTML is required to complete this template
 set.

All of the templates come with META TAG
information that will need to be modified to
 reflect your sites content.

 They include:
the description, keywords, and non-META TAG
 title.

*** Getting Started
-------------------
First thing to do is open the HTML documents
in a text editor and modify the description,
keywords and title of each document.

You can find the locations within each file by
 the meta tag ...

Example:
 <meta name="don't edit this"
 content="edit here">

 See below ...

*** DESCRIPTION
---------------
The description of your site can be anything
that describes your page content and is less
 80 characters in length.

Example:

 <meta name="description"
 content="Many free items for Surfers ... ">

You would insert your description between the
 double quotes ("").

*** KEYWORDS
------------
The keywords are used by the engines to relate
your sites (page) content when users submit queries
at the search engines. You can have up to 800
character within your keywords. Try not to
repeat any word or phrase more than 3 times.

Keywords can be a single descriptive word or
 a phrase.

Example of keywords:

 <meta name="keywords"
content="Freebies, Best free stuff, up to 800 char.">

Once again, you would insert your keywords
 between the double quotes ("").

*** Title
---------
A page title should be specific to that pages
content and should be less than 50 characters
in length. This will ensure that your title
fits on the browsers title bar.

Example of a title:

 <title>Freebie Underground Home!</title>

Note how the <meta ... tag is not used here.
You also don't need any double quotes. You
insert your title after <title> and before
</title> as in the example above.

*** End of Getting Started
--------------------------
At this point you should have all the META
TAGS complete. You can now enter your personal
information, any images you may want to ad and
 anything else you desire.

If you need additional help on HTML ...
get this HTML tutorial in Windows 95+ helpfile
 format.

 copy and paste this address:
 ftp://zdftp.zdnet.com/pub/private/sWlIB/internet/helper_applications/htmr32.zip

*** Entering Information
------------------------
You have a couple of options for your information
input. I recommend using something like Front Page
Express if your in windows 95+ and have installed
the Internet Explorer. The other option is a text
 or HTML editor.

Note: Editing areas within the template(s) that
are not designed to be edited may result in a
deformed template. Unless you know exactly what
your doing ... don't edit outside of the predefined
 areas.

PS If you must play around ... make a copy of a
template and use it to experiment with. This copy
should be in the same directory (folder) as the
other files. Otherwise, the images will not
 display.

Load the template that you want to work in Front
Page Express and take a look at the format. All
areas with text can be changed to support your
 information and/or images.

Simply erase the text (only) and enter yours. Use
the features of Front Page Express to enter images,
hyper links or whatever you want.

The rest is up to you. I don't yet have a tutorial
on Front Page Express. This may be included at a
 later date (??).

** Java Enabled WebPlates
-------------------------
The java enabled templates come with a gu-templatexxx.js
file. The xxx is a number of the template set. This
java file is where all the code for switching images
is kept. This file is needed to run the webplates and
should be uploaded to your server in ASCII mode.

Depending on the webplate you downloaded, you may have to
edit hyper links and/or email and site links. The best way
to do this is to open it with a text editor and search for
  href= to edit hyper links.

If you downloaded a single page template, you will need to
create new files for the links. You will also need to modify
the links in the document. Modify the links first, then
save as whatever the file name is!! Do this for the rest
of the files that you need.

example: you want to create a link to your contact page.

load the index.html and modify all links that need to be
changed (normally 7). Save the file as contact.html. Now
you have a contact.html template that's ready to fill in
  with your information.

Now, do that for the rest of the files that you'll need.

I know this is very limited. I hope to have a help section
covering all this in more detail, if time permits.

** When Things Go Wrong
-----------------------
Doesn't it figure! Sometimes things just don't
 work!

-- Page is all messed-up!
This happens ... you must of edited past an area
that was allowed. The best thing to do here is unzip
a fresh copy of the file(s) that are messed-up and
 start over.

-- Images aren't displaying
This assumes that you haven't changed the images
 directory (folder).

Most of the time ... the cause of images not
displaying is a result of not being found. Make
sure that the path to all the images are pointing
to the actual location of each image.

 Anotherwords ...
your files are considered to be in the root directory
and your images are one level below that, in the images
 directory (folder).

the path statement will look like "images/image01.jpg"
Note how I didn't use the complete path ...
 something like:

 "c:\freetemplates\template01\images\image01.jpg"

this would cause the images to not display on the web.

 Searching for images ...
open the page(s) your having trouble with in a text editor
and perform a search for jpg and/or gif. With each
find, make sure the path is pointing to your images
directory or a directory of images you may have created.

-- Links are broken
 See: Images aren't displaying
When doing a search for links ... use the search string
html and/or href to find links.

-- I just can't do this ...
If this is you ... then you need to contact me for help.
Sometimes I'll help for free, but this depends on the
trouble your having. If you have done a bunch of
modifications and the end results are not what you
expected, then you should expect to pay for help.

If your not sure how something is done or are having
problems getting started ... then I'm here to help
 get you on track.
